Last month, the Harvard Business Review published a list of eleven trends that will shape work in 2022 and beyond. Number nine on their list?
“The chief purpose officer will be the next major C-level role.”

The article goes on to say, “Employees have been asked to bring their whole self to work as organizations try to create a more inclusive and productive work environment. This is fundamentally different than a decade ago when employees were expected to leave their personal perspectives ‘at the door.’”
Companies regarding their employees as whole, unique individuals and not just job descriptions is great news. But … do you know what your purpose is? And further, do you know how to connect it to your company’s core mission?
Sadly, a lot of us haven’t given much thought to what our purpose is. Or we thought about it years ago, but stuffed it back into a drawer because our employers weren’t interested in who we were beyond our resume. Once in a while, we hear our soul whispering to us in the middle of a crazy day, “Whatever our purpose is, this sure isn’t it.”
I’ve been there, too. In a job that was depleting my soul a little more every single day. Where the stress of dealing with misogyny, microaggressions, and dismissiveness wore me down to the bone. Where I had to hide who I truly was—hide the best parts of me—just to get through the day.
