Does it seem like every time you get close to the life you want, you get pulled back from it? Life throws you a curveball? Or there’s yet another fire you have to put out? You come so close to living in abundance—and yet it’s still out of reach.

When that happens, sometimes it’s a sign that you’re heading in the wrong direction, that you’re on a path you’re not meant to be on. Or that you’re following your head and not your heart. But often when we’re reaching for abundance and missing it, it’s our own habits that are holding us back. We have habits that are keeping us in conflict with the abundance we seek.

When we think about abundance, most people think “money.” Abundance is much more than just money. True abundance is a space where you’re in harmonious living. Life feels good. Even though there are disappointments at times, you feel aligned. Nothing breaks you down for long. Your creativity flows and you see possibilities that others can’t.

But a lot of our beliefs about abundance (and scarcity) stem from our beliefs about money. And a lot of our beliefs about money can be traced back to childhood. What conversations did you hear about money when you were growing up? Were your parents worried about bills? Arguing about money? Was there enough money? Did you have more money than your friends did? Or less? If you were the youngest child in a large family, you might have different beliefs about money than your oldest siblings do.

These beliefs go on to impact your thinking in other areas of your life. If you were raised in an environment of overwhelming lack, you may grow up to be an adult who feels uncomfortable whenever something good comes your way. You may have a bank account full of money, but live in constant fear of losing it. You may hoard resources—not just money, but your time and energy. You may feel uncomfortable asking for a raise or a new opportunity or an introduction to a person you’d like to add to your network.

On top of that, society and the media feed us images that make us feel like we’re never enough—not thin enough, not pretty enough, not educated enough, not ambitious. That the “winner takes all.”

Well, guess what? There’s room for lots of winners, actually. And when we’re so focused on the areas where we’re not “enough,” we miss the opportunities to have what’s really important to us.

g2Coach Melanie Foote-Davis joined my recent CEO Session to share with us the habits that keep so many of us from realizing the abundance we want in our lives. Here’s what she had to say:

Let go of old beliefs about money.

As children, we get imprinted with family beliefs about money—and we hang onto them even when our financial picture changes in adulthood. Identify those outdated beliefs and release them. If you believe that wealthy people are all greedy, then your fear of what other people will think of you may lead you to sabotage your own income.

Stop speaking the language of scarcity.

How we talk about ourselves can limit our vision of what’s possible. When you say, “I’m just this or that” or “I don’t have time,” you minimize yourself. Mind your thoughts and words—and turn them around. “You are ALL that!”

Focus on what’s possible.

When you focus on what you don’t have, you miss the opportunities that are right in front of you. Look for abundance and you’ll start to recognize it when it appears.

Envision what you want.

Things are created twice—once in your mind and then second in the manifestation. If you want more money, more joy, more good health, more adventure … paint a vivid picture in your mind of what that looks like.

Practice gratitude.

We are all rich in something. What do you already have? Good health? A great circle of friends? A hobby that gives you joy? Appreciate the abundance you have.

Give back.

Who has fed you spiritually? Which people? Which institutions? Give some time and energy to those who have helped you.
